Signs from God Don’t Come from “On High”
You know you want one, even though you may not care to admit it. You know you’ve secretly wished the bush in your front yard would spontaneously ignite and a voice that sounded suspiciously like that of James Earl Jones would beckon you to its flame. You’ve fantasized about stone tablets being delivered to your front door by a Charleton Heston look alike in a crudely fashioned white toga with brown strap sandals. And when that didn’t happen, you’ve at least considered pleading, begging, bargaining for, issuing threats and/or ultimatums, and in moments when you had nothing to lose, even demanded that God send some kind of SIGN to indicate He/she was paying attention. Come on, God. This human existence is no picnic.Personally, I found myself wavering between: There is no God, and He/She just doesn’t like me.
The latter seemed more likely. But you don’t even have to believe in a God in the traditional sense to know, simply through observation, that something’s running the Universe and even though you may not be able to identify it, what you do know is that it clearly has a sense of humor. (Cellulite? Really?)
The Universe meets us where we are. And many of us have become our own punch line. So, we can at least enjoy the laugh together.
There are no shortage of signs if we’re willing to pay attention. There’s a scene in Bruce Almighty where Jim Carrey is beseeching God for a sign as he’s driving to work. No sooner does he get the words out than a truck pulls in front of him carrying a load of traffic signs ranging from Yield, One Way, to Detour, Speed Limit Ahead, Stop. He’s so wrapped up in his problems he misses the joke (and the messages) completely. The audience doesn’t. We’re outside his personal drama and are able to see the bigger picture.
We always have a choice to either remain clueless or spend some time at least trying to get the picture. When we meet the Universe half way, we can pick and choose form a variety of spiritual messages we are bombarded with day in and day out.
My personal journey started with Help Wanted: Inquire Within. I spent a couple of years working on, In Case of flood, Climb to Higher Ground, and found myself hugging the Please Check Baggage sign at the airport. People starred. I didn’t care; I took photos as though I’d just been reunited with a long lost relative. Which one resonates with you? You will notice the signs that have meaning for you. It actually isn’t hard. Start anywhere.
